São Paulo Transportation Overview

São Paulo’s public transport system includes three main modes:

  1. Metro – Six lines identified by number and color:
    1-Blue, 2-Green, 3-Red, 4-Yellow, 5-Lilac, and 15-Silver
    (Official site: https://www.metro.sp.gov.br/pt_BR/)
  2. Trains (CPTM) – Eight main lines:
    7-Ruby, 8-Diamond, 9-Emerald, 10-Turquoise, 11-Coral, 12-Sapphire, 13-Jade, and Airport Express
    (Official site: https://www.cptm.sp.gov.br/cptm)
  3. Buses (SPTrans) – A large network covering most of the city
    (Official site: https://www.sptrans.com.br/)

The metro and CPTM train systems are integrated and usually the fastest way to get around central and nearby areas. Buses cover more areas but are slower due to traffic.

Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Uber, 99, etc.) are widely available. App-based transport is usually cheaper than taxis. Taxis may be faster in traffic since they can use bus lanes.

Getting from Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) to Avenida Paulista

São Paulo has three major airports: Guarulhos (GRU), Congonhas (CGH), and Viracopos (VCP). Most international flights arrive at GRU, and this section provides transport options between GRU and the Avenida Paulista area (where the hotels are located):

At the Airport

Guarulhos has three terminals (1, 2, 3). Most international flights arrive at Terminal 3.

A free shuttle bus (“GRU Airport” shuttle) connects all three terminals and the CPTM train station (“Estação Aeroporto-Guarulhos”).

  • Shuttle stops are on the arrival level of each terminal.
  • The service runs from 04:00 to 00:00.
  • Buses arrive approximately every 15 minutes.

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. From your terminal’s arrival area, follow signs to the shuttle bus stop.
Look for a black-and-yellow sign marked with the terminal and a train icon with “Trem – CPTM / Train Station.”
  2. Take the shuttle to the CPTM Airport Train station.
  3. At the station, board the Expresso Aeroporto train towards Palmeiras-Barra Funda.
    • This train runs hourly from 05:00 to 00:00.
    • It stops at only four stations: Guarulhos-CECAP, Brás, Luz, and Palmeiras-Barra Funda.
  4. Get off at Luz Station.

From Luz Station to the Hotels

To the Student Hotel (Bela Cintra Flat Service)
  • At Luz Station, transfer to Metro Line 4-Yellow (direction Vila Sônia).
  • Exit at Higienópolis-Mackenzie station.
  • Walk ~10 minutes to the hotel.
To the Faculty Hotel (Intercity Pamplona – The Universe Paulista)
  • At Luz Station, transfer to Metro Line 4-Yellow (direction Vila Sônia).
  • Exit at Consolação station.
  • Inside the station, follow signs to Metro Line 2-Green (direction Vila Prudente) and ride one stop to Trianon-MASP.
  • Walk ~10 minutes to the hotel.

How to Buy Metro/Train and Bus Tickets

  • Metro & Train:
All stations have self-service kiosks that accept debit cards and issue a paper ticket with a QR code.
    – Use the QR code to enter through the turnstiles.
Transfers between lines do not require extra tickets.
    – Some metro stations also allow contactless payment (tap-to-pay) with debit or credit cards at designated gates.
  • Bus:
Most buses accept contactless payment (NFC) directly at the bus turnstile using app-based wallets or physical cards (Visa, Mastercard, Elo, etc.).

Fare Information

  • Current metro/train fare: R$5.20
  • New metro/train fare (from January 6): R$5.40
  • Current bus fare: R$5.00
  • New bus fare (from January 6): R$5.30

Alternative Options to Travel from GRU to Avenida Paulista

If the Airport Express train schedule does not align with your arrival, other reliable alternatives are:

  • Executive coach bus (airport → Paulista region):
Operated by the company Airport Bus Service, which runs five lines linking GRU to key locations in São Paulo (Congonhas Airport, Tietê Bus Station, Barra Funda Bus Station, República Square, and Paulista Avenue). Tickets can be purchased at the Airport Bus Service kiosk (blue and red logo) located on the arrival level of Terminal 2, directly from the driver, or via the company’s website (Portuguese only). The bus stops at several hotels along the way to Paulista Avenue, and its final stop is at the corner of Rua Augusta and Alameda Santos, one block from Paulista Avenue.
  • Taxis (airport stand):
Official Guarucoop taxis are available 24/7 at taxi stands on the arrival level of each terminal.
  • Ride-hailing pickup zones:
Apps such as Uber and 99 operate at GRU. Pickups occur at the designated app-pickup areas outside arrivals.
